Acoustic Guitar Background

The acoustic guitar was born as a modern classical guitar. It was based on incorporating steel strings to change the sound to one that was louder and brighter.

Acoustic guitars are made of solid construction so they are able to handle the high tension of steel strings. The guitar is generally made from high quality wood and due to scarcity can be very expensive.

To cater to the lower end market, alternative woods such as mahogany or red cedar are use to make cheap acoustic guitars. Originating out of China aimed at offering an even cheaper alternative, some plastic varieties of guitars have emerged. These are not recommended as the sound quality is inferior.

Although the quality and type of wood does make a difference to the sound, experience suggests the sound difference is not as great as the difference in price would suggest. Generally, poor sounding guitars are a result of poor construction methods. In fact, if you are a beginner you are unlikely to notice a difference between an expensive or a less expensive guitar.

Once you have about 5 years experience, or become an expert it can be worthwhile upgrading to a more expensive model. Generally you are safe if you stick to the well known acoustic guitar manufacturers such as Alvarez, Archtop, Aria, Body, Cutaway, Dean, Epiphone, Fender, First Act, Gibson, Martin, Yamaha and any of the other manufacturer's models by clicking on any menu item on the left.

Some of my favorites are Alvarez acoustic guitars, Yamaha acoustic guitars and Takamine. You can pick up cheap acoustic guitars from the latter two which sound glorious despite their very low pricing. If you are a beginner, you should consider brands from these manufacturers. They are popular and easy to resell when you are ready to upgrade.  So buy your dream acoustic guitar right now.
